Providing Goats to Children in Need |
For each and every home Steve and Chris help you buy or sell, a goat is given to a child or childs family in Africa. In 2005 alone, generous donors made it possible to provide 11,664 goats. While Steve McEnelly and Chris Olson are driven to make a difference in their local Anoka, MN community, they also have a personal commitment to make a difference to families around the world. McEnelly and Olson have chosen to work with - World Vision, an international Christian humanitarian organization that serves the world's poorest children and families in nearly 100 countries. Founded in 1950, World Vision helps needy children and families by providing fruit tree seedlings, vegetable seeds, planting tools and agricultural training as well as help with education and other basic needs. World Vision also provides goats to needy children and families. While a single gift of a goat may seem insignificant, in developing countries a goat can furnish a family with milk, cheese, butter and yogurt for nutritious meals and can even be a source of income. A goat can be instrumental in breaking the cycle of poverty for a family in need. In Southern Rwanda families like the Munyankindis, enjoy caring for their goats. With the help of World Vision, more and more families in the community of Gatoki are escaping the pain of hunger. Throughout southern Rwanda goats are making a significant difference in the lives of children and families. Nicole Ruyambaze is the head of her household. She is pictured here with her 7-year old brother Jean Claude and their goat. Nicole has four siblings and acts as caretaker and mother. Their father died in 1994 and their mother died in 1998. World Vision has helped her in many ways including enrollment in vocational training. Nicole said, "I have no one to help me, except myself and World Vision. I thank the Lord for you. The struggles I have are the problems of daily living. How do we eat and meet our daily requirements".
